The next morning came without incident; the rags soaked in blessed water seemed to help Kathryn regain some of her strength. She was able to get up and hobble to the bathroom when she needed to, and then hobble back to bed. Her outlook felt better, too. Her mind no longer raced with possibilities and outcomes. For the first time in what seemed like forever, she was absolutely present to what was happening in the moment. And for the next two days, she slept for most of those moments. She came in and out of consciousness when Ovida brought her blessed soup and water to eat and drink, and to soak new rags for her. Her dreams were vivid and stunning. The colors lit up like a sunrise on the ocean and she dreamed of all the people she loved in her life. There was no appearance of Matthew. In fact, Kathryn gave little thought to The Quest. Quite possibly for the first time in her life.

One night, she awoke at 3 a.m., sitting upright in her bed—everything was quiet and pitch black. It was a bit eerie, like no one else existed. But then, she began to see flickers of white lights above her. They came from several different corners of the room and hovered above her. She had the thought that she should be scared, but she wasn’t.

She lay back down, and ever so gently went back to sleep.

The next morning when the rooster crowed (as it did every morning in Abadiania), she didn’t feel irritated. She felt ready to rejoin the rest of the world.

It had been three days of isolation, but on the fourth day, Kathryn woke up with a renewed sense of purpose and an unknown emotion. She felt, for the first time in her life, peaceful. Ovida informed her that today would be her day to go to Revision—where individuals go before John of God to find out if they need another psychic surgery (Kathryn was praying that he would not require her to have any further surgeries), or if they were assigned to sit in “current” (channeling meditation). Kathryn spent the morning praying to be sent to current.

For the first time since her psychic surgery, Kathryn went to eat with the other Luz Divina guests in the main dining area, which was a lot like a covered carport with a protected cover overhead and open space on the two other sides. It felt as though you were sitting outside, even when the gentle rain fell on the lush greenery surrounding the pousada. The friendly voices and laugher helped ease Kathryn’s John of God fears as she walked to the dining area. Immediately, she was greeted with smiles and words of affirmation. “There she is!” “We missed you!” “You look beautiful!”

And Henry with his toothy, gapped grin, “I knew you would make it through, love.”

Kathryn scooped up fresh fruit and eggs, along with a small cup of green tea. Her appetite was starting to return, thankfully.
